DBT is a type of CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) that teaches the two opposing strategies of acceptance and change management. DBT is often described as a skills-based program because you are learning and practicing new behaviours and thinking. To begin DBT will help you establishing a sense of control over your behaviour. From here you learn how to accept your emotions and regulate them. After these skills have been established, therapy begins to take these skills and apply them to the real life changes you desire.
DBT is a recommended clinical treatment for anyone with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. Research also supports it as an effective treatment for those who experience suicidal behaviour, PTSD, depression, self – harm, substance abuse, and eating disorders. It is also beneficial for anyone who finds their emotions get in the way of their functioning or ability to accomplish what they would like to in life.
